Latvian feature film “Maria’s Silence” at Park Cinema
Cinema enthusiasts had the chance to experience the Latvian feature film “Maria’s Silence” at a free screening held at Park Cinema (Flame Towers) on Friday 11 April. The event was organised by the Embassy of Latvia in Azerbaijan with support from the EU Delegation and was the final event of the “Strong Woman, Strong Society” campaign, marking International Women’s Day 2025. The campaign supported a series of events and used social media to promote gender equality and raise awareness about gender stereotypes. For this final event “Maria’s Silence” was selected as it is based on the true story of renowned Latvian actress Maria Leiko. The film portrays her inner conflict between the lies of Stalin’s regime and her deep love for her grandchild. Maria strives to remain true to her faith in art and human dignity. This powerful drama reveals the profound and painful impact of avoiding confrontation with authority, both on a personal and creative level. Following an opening speech by Ilze Landisa, Deputy Head of Mission at the Latvian Embassy, more than 100 people including EU ambassadors, members of the press and students enjoyed the film.
