On 18 June, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen participated in an Eastern Partnership leaders’ video conference. The meeting brought together 33 Heads of State or Government from EU Member States and the six Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine).
President of the European Council Charles Michel chaired the meeting. EU High Representative Josef Borrell also took part in the event.
On the back of the Joint Communication on the Eastern Partnership beyond 2020, presented by the European Commission and the High Representative in March this year, and the subsequent Council Conclusions, the leaders discussed the long-term objectives of the policy and the need to build on the success of the 20 deliverables for 2020 with new deliverables.
“Today we stressed the importance of solidarity in times of COVID-19, showing support to our partners and looking at the future,” President of the European Council Charles Michel said on Twitter right after the event.
“Over the years, the Eastern Partnership has proven to be mutually beneficial and has been delivering concrete results for people.”
The leaders covered the response to COVID-19 pandemic, whereby the European Union has supported the immediate health needs and longer-term socio-economic recovery of countries in the region with over €2.4 billion in a combination of grants, loans and macro-financial assistance.
