Promoting the Role of Civil Society in Gender-sensitive Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals

Project Description
In the spirit of the ‘leaving no one behind’ principle of the 2030 Agenda, the project seeks to extend the benefits of sustainable development to women and girls that are excluded from economic, social and other types of activities. The project will do so by applying a twin-track approach, i.e. by encouraging stakeholders to pursue SDG 5 as a stand-alone goal as well as to mainstream gender in 14 SDGs with gender-related targets and integrate gender issues in spheres like employment, education, health, access to resources, data collection and monitoring etc.

The civil society organizations (CSOs) will act as the key agents to test and apply the twin-track approach to gender-sensitive SDGs implementation. For this purpose, the project will build capacities of the local CSOs through a series of trainings and access to learning resources; facilitate networking and forge partnerships between the CSOs, national and local authorities; and help CSOs accumulate practical experiences in applying the twin-track approach to gender-sensitive SDGs implementation by financing a small grant programme.
Specific Objective
The overall objective of this project is to promote active and effective participation of the civil society organisations in the gender-sensitive formulation and implementation of the national agenda for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Expected Results
- A platform for dialogue and networking between the CSOs and the government of Azerbaijan on including gender considerations in the implementation of the SDG agenda will be established;
- CSOs will gain an increased understanding of the SDGs framework and capacities to apply gender-responsive approaches to the SDG implementation;
- A grant programme to support CSO-led gender-sensitive SDG initiatives will be designed and implemented.
